I think what really stood out to me about our discussion was what Sana said about there being a difference between empathy and sympathy. Having respect for someone and their emotions and letting them experience them.
They emphasized the importance in empowering refugees and allowing THEM to tell their story, instead of using their experiences to tell your own story.
Something I thought was important was recognizing that a lot of what refugees experience isn't a "story" it's their life. It's important to have respect for the things they've gone through and to realize that these events and the emotions tied to them are very real and present in their lives. No matter how long ago it happened or how "bad" it was, it's important to respect their emotions and experiences and not downplay or degrade them
Be careful with your language and have respect.
